Alabama weekend itinerary: a two-day plan

This plan covers the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on day one and the Legacy Sites in Montgomery on day two. It is an editorial sequence from official sources; the Institute is closed Sunday and Monday and the Legacy Sites are closed Tuesday, so the plan works on Wednesday–Saturday. We verified no driving time between the cities.

Day 1: Birmingham

  1. Morning — Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Tuesday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., last admission 4 p.m.; adults $15.

Day 2: Montgomery

  1. Morning — Legacy Museum, $5 e-ticket covering all four Legacy Sites; allow 3–5 hours.
  2. Afternoon — National Memorial for Peace and Justice, about 1–2 hours, reached by a free shuttle from the museum.
  3. Option — Rosa Parks Museum, Monday–Friday 9–5 (closed noon–1) and Saturday 9–3.

Getting around

We verified only a few local fares and rail links; see transportation and check a map for the Birmingham–Montgomery drive.

Swap options

  • Space instead: replace Day 2 with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville (adults $30).
  • Gulf instead: USS Alabama in Mobile (daily 8–5).

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Alabama in a weekend?

Not all of it; the plan covers two civil rights sites in two days.

Do I need a car?

We verified no intercity bus; Amtrak serves Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, but a car is the practical choice for this route.

Which days work?

Wednesday through Saturday, so the Institute and the Legacy Sites are both open.
