For a first visit, base yourself in the city that matches your main attraction. The Alabama Department of Revenue says the state lodgings tax is 5% in 16 counties (including Madison, where Huntsville is) and 4% in all other counties, and that counties and municipalities may add local lodgings taxes of 1% to 13%. We could not verify the local rates for particular cities, so the calculator below applies only the 4% state rate, which applies in most counties, including those containing Birmingham, Mobile, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and Gulf Shores. Treat its total as a floor.

Alabama hotel-tax calculator (state lodgings tax, 4% rate)
This calculator applies the 4% Alabama state lodgings tax that the Department of Revenue lists for all counties outside its 16-county 5% list, as read October 17, 2026. It does not include local lodgings taxes (1% to 13%), sales taxes, the extra point in the 16 northern counties such as Madison County (Huntsville), resort fees or parking, so your actual total may be higher. Ask your hotel for its all-in rate.
