First-time visitor guide to Alabama

Alabama is a driving state with different highlights in different cities, so pick two or three: Birmingham and Montgomery for civil rights history, Huntsville for the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and Mobile or the Gulf Coast for the USS Alabama and the beaches. NOAA's normal highs at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport range from 54.5°F in January to 91.0°F in July. We verified no driving times, so check a map for distances.

Quick plan (our recommendation)

This is an editorial plan from official sources, not a trip we took. See the weekend itinerary for a two-stop version.

  1. Civil rights history: the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, then the Legacy Sites and the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery.
  2. Space: the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville.
  3. Gulf Coast: USS Alabama in Mobile and Gulf State Park.

Getting around

Alabama's cities are far apart and we verified only a few local fares and rail links; see transportation.

When to go

NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Birmingham show highs of 88.1–91.0°F from June to August and 4.35–5.42 inches of rain a month, with cool winters (lows near 35–38°F). Snow is rare. The Gulf Coast and the Tennessee Valley may differ; see the best-time guide.

Safety and practical tips

Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen (American Academy of Dermatology) and see NOAA heat guidance for summer. This guide publishes no crime statistics or safety ratings.

What this guide does not cover

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Alabama?

Two to three days covers one region well; seeing several cities takes longer because they are far apart. This is our recommendation.

How much is the Civil Rights Institute?

Adults $15; seniors 65+, military and students $13.

Are the Legacy Sites open on Tuesdays?

No. The Equal Justice Initiative lists them as closed on Tuesdays.

How are lodgings taxes described?

The state rate is 4% in most counties and 5% in 16 northern counties, plus local taxes of 1% to 13%; ask your hotel for the all-in total.
